As you run your Shopify store, you may be struggling to find a way to maintain a consistent and predictable monthly revenue. This is where subscriptions can help. Think of recurring subscriptions as a way for customers to receive your products regularly without having to manually place an order each time. Instead of having your customers come back each time they need to restock, you can offer them the option to subscribe. This is your secret to ongoing income.
The advantage of using subscriptions in your Shopify store is the creation of predictable income. With a subscription model, you can forecast your revenue more accurately because you know how many subscribers you have and how much they regularly pay. The steady stream of income makes financial planning significantly smoother and helps you grow your store at steady pace. Knowing exactly how much money is coming in each month allows you to plan with greater confidence. Now you know how much you can spend on new products, hiring staff, or expanding your marketing efforts.

Creating Subscription Plans
The first step in using the app is to configure your Plans. Think of Plans as the backbone of your subscription offerings. These are the various subscription models you set up for your products or services. Each Plan defines the recurring cycle, how much they are billed and what they receive in return.
You can set up different billing cycles, offering weekly, monthly, or even annual subscriptions. This flexibility ensures you can cater to the diverse needs and preferences of your customers. You're not just limited to physical products either. The app supports digital products and services, so whether you're selling coffee beans or online yoga classes, you have the tools you need.
You create a subscription plan from the Shopify Subscriptions app or from the product page in the Shopify admin. Simply enter the plan details including the name, title for the storefront, participating products and recurring details. You will see a form like this:
Create as many different Plans as you need to support your customers. You can create premium plans for those willing to pay more or basic plans for those who prefer a more economical option. This tiered approach can help maximize your options and appeal to a broader customer base. We suggest trying different tactics to help attract new subscribers and retain existing ones.
Adding Subscriptions To Your Theme
After you set up a subscription plan, you need to add the subscription widget to your product theme page. The widget is a Shopify section block that displays the details of each subscription plan, including pricing, billing cycle, and terms. Now when a customer browses a product that has a subscription option, they can easily see all the relevant details. The widget is easy to add and position within your theme using the customizer page. Simply click to edit the appearance and drag the block to reposition. You should see something in your theme editor that looks like this:
Here are the basic steps to get this activated:
Access the Shopify theme customizer
Navigate to product page theme and preview a subscription product
Add the new Subscriptions section if it's not already added
Click on the block to customize the appearance. This includes setting the colors, fonts, and layout to match your store's branding.
Drag the block to any position on the page
The subscription options will now appear on all relevant product pages.
In addition to the product page, subscription details will also display in the cart, checkout and thank you pages.
Activate Customer Subscription Management
The new Shopify Subscriptions app allows merchants to activate subscription management within the customer account page to enhance customer experience and retention. Customers can now easily see and manage their recurring orders. By activating this feature, customers won't need to contact your customer service for basic subscription changes. This saves you time and money while making the experience more user-friendly for your customers.
To activate this feature, navigate to your Settings page and click on the Customer Accounts section. From here you will see the subscriptions card:
With this activated, customers can view and manage their one-time and subscription purchases right from their account page on your site. They can resume, skip, or cancel their subscriptions. Customer payment information is automatically stored by Shopify so each order will use the same billing method as the first payment. You can't access or view your customers' subscription credit card information after the order is placed but rest assured that Shopify is securely saving this info.
Now when customers log in to their account from your store and manage their subscriptions, they will see a page that looks similar to this:
The new Shopify Subscriptions app is a versatile tool for any Shopify merchant looking to dive into the world of subscriptions. It simplifies the setup and management of subscription plans while enhancing customer experience. It also helps your store make more money from recurring revenue.
The subscription model is attractive as it provides a predictable and steady revenue stream for your Shopify store. You can focus on customer retention through recurring, personalized relationships. This will keep them engaged with your store and provides opportunities for additional revenue through upselling and cross-selling.
Whether you're an Shopify pro or just starting out, this app could be the key to unlocking a steady stream of recurring revenue.
